Rita Baldwin: A Journey of Self-Taught Artistry
Artistic Evolution
Rita Baldwin identifies herself as primarily self-taught, with her artistic journey spanning numerous years of exploration and experimentation across various styles and techniques. A consistent theme in Baldwin's work is her profound love for nature. Whether through moody landscapes or imbued with a sense of mystery, she endeavors to express her emotional reactions to different scenes, seeking to captivate viewers with the beauty and dynamism of the natural world. Baldwin aspires to evoke emotions through her artwork, hoping that the expression of her emotional reactions will result in paintings that convey moody landscapes and a sense of mystery. A defining characteristic of Baldwin's technique is her adept use of broad, strong strokes in oil paint. Each stroke is a deliberate and expressive mark, contributing to the dynamic energy and movement within her paintings. She has recently retired from the Orchid Gallery, a commercial orchid-growing business in Chatham County which she and her son founded and operated for over 30 years and which is now owned by Jeff Baldwin. Flowers and birds have long been passions of Baldwin’s and often become themes in her work.
